Lil' Forky Deer Hunt
Mar/07/09 :12:04 PM
On December 22, 2008 I was running out of time on my
deer tag, so I decided to see what deer I may find
close to home.
Found a deer bed and tracks in the snow, so the stalk began. I bagged a small one I've dubbed "Lil Forky Buck".
I had my camera with me and decided to document the stalk all the way to the bloody end.
Please indulge me with this poem I dreamed up as a play-by-play story with pictures...
Twas three days before Christmas when I found his bed....made me stop and wonder..what kind of antlers he had on his head!
So I took up the trail...with the tracks in the snow...just had that feelin..I would not fail!
It wasn't too long....till I spotted this buck...about thirty yards out...just my luck !
As he nibbled the fir limb...that fell to the ground...I nocked up an arrow...without makin a sound !
Just one little problem...I had in the way...The arch of the arrow was sure to collide...with a small little limb...and not with his hide !
But I had to try... to clear that limb...and just like I figured...twice I missed him !
He didn't like it...and made me more tracks...didn't seem too scared...didn't even look back !
Silently now... as I moved through the snow...I spotted some movement...him and a doe !
Closer this time...in a vine maple tangle...if I leaned just so...I had the angle !
I concentrated...like threading a needle...let go of the string...well fiddle de deedle
I looked at my quiver...as I replayed the shot....just a little far back...probably liver
I'd give it some time...just to make sure....I love this snow...so white and so pure !
As I followed it up...the hit was revealed...so was the buck...Gods gift of the field !
